Summer Allergies and Preparing for Fall Allergy Season

Many people think allergy season ends after spring, but allergy symptoms can continue well into late summer and fall. Ragweed is one of the most common fall allergens, with pollen levels often rising in early August and lasting until the first frost. Mold spores can also become more common during this time of year, especially around vegetation, crop harvesting, and damp outdoor conditions.

Weather and environmental conditions can also affect allergy symptoms. Increased humidity, flooding, strong winds, and changing temperatures may all contribute to higher allergen levels and worsening symptoms. Spending more time outdoors during late summer and early fall can also increase exposure to pollen and mold spores, especially during activities such as gardening, hiking, yard work, or attending outdoor sporting events.

While avoiding allergens completely can be difficult, there are several ways to help reduce exposure and manage symptoms. Using air conditioning during late summer and fall may help reduce indoor exposure to pollen and mold. Keeping windows closed on high pollen days, showering after spending time outdoors, and washing bedding regularly may also help minimize allergens inside the home. Over-the-counter treatments such as nasal sprays, eye drops, and oral antihistamines may also provide relief when symptoms occur.

Some individuals may also notice allergy symptoms affecting their sleep, concentration, or daily activities. Persistent congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, or sinus pressure can make it difficult to feel rested and comfortable throughout the day. Children returning to school activities and adults spending more time outdoors during harvest and fall sports seasons may experience increased exposure to allergens during this time.

Seasonal allergies can sometimes feel similar to a cold or sinus infection because both may cause congestion, sneezing, or a runny nose. However, allergies typically do not cause fever or body aches, which are more commonly associated with infections.

If allergy symptoms are not well controlled with over-the-counter medications, it may be time to see an allergy specialist. Allergy providers can help identify specific triggers, personalize treatment options, and determine whether additional therapies, such as allergy shots, may be beneficial.

One of the most important things to remember heading into fall allergy season is that allergy medications often work best when started before symptoms become severe. Taking steps early may help reduce symptoms and improve comfort throughout the season.
